How to Survive the Apocalypse: A Burning Opera

Musical theater anyone?  Yes?  Sweet.

Ok, how’s about a rock opera?  How’s about a Burning Man themed rock opera?  Now we’re talking!

How to Survive the Apocalypse, A Burning Opera is showing at Teatro ZinZanni 10/5-7, 10/12-14 and they just announced they’ve added two more show dates, 10/19 & 20.  Tickets range anywhere from $35 to $300, depending on how you want to do it.

The website has this to say about the creation:

How to Survive the Apocalypse” is a Burning Man-inspired theatrical freak-out that combines rock opera, vaudeville, and a Dionysian revival show that is just as inspired and terrified by current events as you are. Part mutant mystery play, part crash-course in proactive future culture, we welcome you to an ambitious and ferociously inventive radically-altered evening of musical theater,  scored by Mark Nichols with libretto by counterculture writer Erik Davis.  Prepare to Participate!

Neat.

Cell Phones At Burning man?!?!?!

Cell phone’s at Burning Man?

Yep, its true. Earplugs’ own Bex Marks the Spot went up early with the volunteer team, and she just called me from the Playa. I feel special. (And now am going to change the bike I’m bringing up… she reports there are still some sand traps this year)

Not sure how I feel about this though: People are actually tweeting from the playa!

What about the 10 Principles of Burning Man?

Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

I don’t know about you, but I’m going to leave my shit OFF.

More info here.

Burning Man 2009 Poster, Street Names, and Black Rock City on Google Earth

The Burning Man 2009 “Evolution” poster is now available from the Burning Man website with stunning art from Cory and Catska.

The street names have also been posted and I think they are particularly good this year. See the full 2009 Black Rock City layout here. For those non-burners out there, during the event Black Rock City is laid out like a clock, with the man at the center. Streets are laid out in concentric circles and along times of the day, from 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock. The streets that are part of the concentric circle grid change names every year according to the theme. They always stay in alphabetical order, and the Esplanade is the first promenade/boardwalky sort of street before the open playa. Thus, it is extremely easy to find your way around in Black Rock City because you can always pinpoint your address in the clock. For example, your camp might be at “6:30 and Adapt” (Adapt would be the first street off the Esplanade.)

    2009 Black Rock City Streets:

    Esplanade
    Adapt
    Biology
    Chaos
    DNA
    Extinct
    Fossil
    Genome
    Hominid
    Inherit
    Jurassic
    Kinship
    Lineage

    Center Camp ring road: Evolution

I think during the event everyone should call “C” street “Creationism,” just to get people riled up, given the whole “Evolution” theme and all.

If you like playing around with Google Earth, you can download data sets from the past three years of Burning Man with 3-D models of art pieces and theme camps done in Google Sketch-Up. Get it here.
