Mary Anne Hobbs Wrecks Dancefloors, Breaks Hearts

Mary Ann Hobbs takes her job very seriously

Mary Ann Hobbs takes her job very seriously

Last night, Mary Anne Hobbs took a quick break from influencing worldwide tastes in dance music with her BBC Radio One Experimental show to make a quick stop at 103 Harriet to give San Francisco seismologists something new to worry about.

Mary Anne has been instrumental in transforming dubstep from an underground London curiosity into a full-blown worldwide movement, giving extra-special love to the Bay Area along the way. It’s no surprise, then, that her arrival was greeted with open arms and wobbly knees. Mary Anne responded, in turn, with a pair of ruptured eardrums for each of the evening’s revellers.

Over the course of the evening, Mary Anne rattled off a litany of dancefloor crushing bassgasms, raised the roof a bit, did a very cute DJ dance, and all-in-all appeared to be having a splendid time.

This guy was also there.

This guy was also there.

In case you didn’t notice, Mary Anne is also devastatingly hot — like a night in Cuba. An informal survey of the evening’s clubgoers revealed that approximately 98.2% of males and 82.3% of females present would “totally do her” given the chance. Of this number, approximately 72.3% expressed their desire for Mary Anne to “have [their] babies, omg.”

Mary Anne was unavailable for comment, but one can only assume that she would be flattered by the survey’s findings.

Check out her show’s website here.

Archived mixes can be found here.

XCLR8R’s podcast features Mary Anne’s San Francisco set as a free download here, with full a full tracklisting.

Z-Trip – Obama Mix Part 2

So right before the election, DJ Z-trip and Shepard Fairey put on some fundraisers for the Obama campaign called the ‘Party For Change.’ Z-Trip released a get-out-the-vote mix right in conjunction with those parties right before the election, and it was top notch. Z-Trip as usual showed he is a master of the craft when it comes to blends and inventive mixing.

He just followed it up with a new Obama Mix, called ‘Victory Lap.’ Cop it and enjoy!

And as long as you’re at the z-trip download page, you should probably cop “Uneasy Listening” and the “Motown Breakdown” while you’re at it.

As viral video goes… this ‘Watchmen’ spot nailed it

This is brilliant. They even nailed the crappy vhs tracking lines at the bottom of the screen.

I can’t wait for this movie.

At one point in the night dudes were hopping on a laptop and dj-ing straight from YouTube videos. The guy that plays Mufasa in the Broadway production of The Lion King was busting moves to Beyonce like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Even this guy showed up!

I also learned that similar to cheesteaks tasting better in Philadelphia, getting down to Biggie in Brooklyn can’t be beat.

Yes Brooklyn. Yes.

Ursula 1000 – Funky Breaks and breakdancing squirrels

Ursula 1000 is my kind of producer as he is up on some funky 60′s beach party cha-cha-cha go-go shit, remixing it into pure heat. Check out this promo mix for some funky breaks. He drops a hot remix of old school Salt-N-Peppa at about the 17:30 mark.

I want to make friends with Ursula 1000 because he parties with woodland creatures that can pop and lock:

Santacon at the South Pole

So a year or two ago when looking for info about Santacon, I found a link to a Santacon event put on in friggin’ Antarctica.

That’s right.

The South Pole.

There is an amazing Flickr set of photos of these shennanigans from Flickr user Sandwich Girl.

Check it:

I recognized the name Sandwich Girl while looking at the Flickr pool of the Bush St. becoming Obama St. Way to be involved in both a secret street sign mission and a South Pole Santacon. Sandwich Girl, whoever you are, you get two thumbs up and a gold star.

In the Flickr set you may notice a bunch of Santas playing on crazy blue orb thingys. Turns out its an art installation!

Want to see what the South Pole looks like this very second? (Its actually a bit anti-climactic)

Who knew? A volcano in Antarctica!

GO-BAMA!!!!

Yeah Yeah Yeah!

Go Go Gadget Presidency!

I like that Obama repped Hawaii during the inauguration. Coolest. President. Ever.

Someecards puts it nicely here.

But I am a tad concerned. I hope America realizes that the man won’t be able to make it shower rainbows and puppydogs overnight in this piece.

This fascinating wordcloud analysis of Obama’s speech vs. past presidents is an amazing way to look at speeches.

There sure was a lot of coverage of Michelle Obama’s dress, but not much coverage of the effing awesome guerrilla street sign jedi move pulled in San Francisco of Bush street getting changed to Obama street. Big ups to laughingsquid and takingcareofbidness for that one.

And can I get a hell yeah for Obama shutting down Guantanamo?

L.S.D. – Bassnectar Remix

I gotta say this was the art car anthem of Black Rock City 2008.

L.S.D – Bassnectar Remix

You can also peep a longer mix here, from Bassnectar’s Podcast. Thanks Loren.

Oh yeah… and this video is pretty cool too:

If you look closely you can see that Lorin is the guy playing all the instruments.
